Collingwood Town Hall

As a component of the Collingwood Downtown Streetscape Revitalization project (2011), Envision-Tatham designed the civic plaza and adjacent pedestrian laneways surrounding Collingwood’s historic Town Hall and Eddie Bush Arena. As a prominent community site in the downtown core, our design process focused on collaborative input from Town staff, Council, and the public. The space was simplified and enlarged to better facilitate public gatherings, civic expression, and seating. The enhancement of the two urban laneways flanking Town Hall also marked the initial phase of the Town’s laneway improvements strategy, developed by our firm through the ‘Collingwood Laneway Design Guidelines’. The laneways provide safe and visible mid-block pedestrian and cyclist connections to adjacent streets and municipal parking facilities in support of the Town’s active transportation goals. Provision has also been made for the future incorporation of destination cyclist amenities and covered bicycle parking adjacent to Town Hall.  The overall result of the project is an engaging civic plaza that evokes a strong presence along Hurontario St., creates better visual and physical access to Town Hall and the Eddie Bush Arena, and celebrates the building’s unique historic architecture.
