Penetanguishene Downtown Streetscape Revitalization
Envision-Tatham is currently working with the Town of Penetanguishene to re-vision the two key streets that define their downtown core: Main Street and Robert Street West. Stemming from the need to replace underground infrastructure, the street reconstruction created the opportunity to re-define the Penetanguishene townscape through the integration of tourism, economic development, and pedestrian objectives, expressed through recent planning studies. The resulting design is defined by enhanced pedestrian environments, civic and cultural destinations, outdoor retail opportunities and patios, and the transformation of Robert St. West into a flexible civic environment. Recommendations for a ‘road diet’ for the highway commercial portion of Main St. was tested through various pilot projects during the summer of 2014 and we are currently completing the design development, stakeholder, consensus-building process. It has been a passionate and rewarding conversation with the Penetanguishene community which has been the catalyst for continued discussions in urban design planning and future downtown sustainability. Following the completion of construction documents in 2016, the re-construction of Main St. is scheduled for the summer of 2017.
