Collingwood Laneway Design Guidelines

Expanding on the preliminary work by the Collingwood BIA’s Walkway & Laneway Committee (WALC) and the Town of Collingwood, Envision-Tatham was retained to develop the Collingwood Laneway Design Guidelines (2014). The guidelines provide a framework to develop and enhance Collingwood’s existing mid-block laneways, walkways and public parking lots as a secondary pedestrian, bicycle and cultural network in the downtown core. The Collingwood Laneway Design Guidelines identify existing movement patterns and usage of the laneways and outlines the potential benefits that enhancement and activation can have on the environment, businesses & housing, social & cultural expression, heritage & architecture, active transportation, and tourism. The best practice principles outlined in the report were demonstrated through conceptual designs prepared for one of Collingwood’s prominent public laneways. The laneways were also used as a venue to actively engage the community, highlight the potential benefits, and assist in changing the public’s perspective and relationship with these existing urban spaces.
